INTERPRETING DReAMS

This guide follows Freud’s model, which views dreams as expressions of unconscious wishes, conflicts, and repressed material. The goal is to move from the surface dream (what you remember) to the hidden meaning (what it represents).

🪜 Step 1: Record the Dream (Manifest Content)

Write down your dream immediately after waking:

  • Include people, places, actions, emotions, and details
  • Do not interpret yet—just capture the raw experience

This is what Freud called the manifest content:

  • The dream as it appears on the surface

🔍 Step 2: Break the Dream into Elements

Divide the dream into parts:

  • Characters
  • Objects
  • Events
  • Feelings

Each element may carry separate symbolic meaning.

🧠 Step 3: Free Association

For each element, ask yourself:

  • “What does this remind me of?”
  • “What comes to mind first?”

Write freely without filtering. This reveals:

  • Personal connections
  • Links to memories, desires, or conflicts

Freud believed meaning comes from:

  • Your own associations, not fixed symbols

🔐 Step 4: Identify Repressed Material

Look for:

  • Thoughts or feelings that are:
    • Uncomfortable
    • Embarrassing
    • Socially unacceptable

Dreams often disguise:

  • Repressed wishes or impulses

Ask:

  • “What might I be avoiding or suppressing?”

⚖️ Step 5: Recognize Dream Distortion Mechanisms

Freud explained that dreams disguise meaning through:

🔁 Displacement:

  • Emotional importance shifted onto something minor

🧩 Condensation:

  • Multiple ideas combined into one symbol

🎭 Symbolism:

  • Indirect representation of deeper content

🔄 Secondary Revision:

  • The mind organizes the dream into a story

Identify how your dream:

  • Hides or reshapes its true meaning

⚡ Step 6: Examine Emotional Tone

Focus on how you felt:

  • Fear, desire, shame, excitement

Emotions point to:

  • The true significance of the dream

Ask:

  • “What feeling stands out most?”

🔄 Step 7: Connect to Waking Life

Relate dream elements to:

  • Current situations
  • Relationships
  • Conflicts or stress

Freud emphasized:

  • Dreams are rooted in recent experiences and unresolved issues

🌑 Step 8: Uncover the Latent Content

Now interpret the hidden meaning:

  • What unconscious wish, fear, or conflict is being expressed?

This is the latent content:

  • The true meaning beneath the surface

⚖️ Step 9: Identify Wish Fulfillment

Freud believed all dreams involve:

  • Wish fulfillment, even if disguised

Ask:

  • “What desire is being satisfied in this dream?”
  • “How is this wish hidden or altered?”

🧭 Step 10: Reflect Without Judgment

Do not reject the interpretation:

  • Even uncomfortable meanings are valuable

The goal is:

  • Awareness, not approval

🌙 Core Method Summary

Freud’s dream interpretation process:

  1. Record the dream
  2. Break it into elements
  3. Use free association
  4. Identify repression
  5. Analyze distortion
  6. Focus on emotions
  7. Connect to life
  8. Reveal latent content
  9. Identify wish fulfillment
  10. Reflect

✨ Essence

In Freud’s model, dreams are coded messages from the unconscious—and by carefully unfolding them, you uncover the hidden desires, conflicts, and truths shaping your inner life.

This guide follows Jung’s model, which sees dreams as messages from the psyche working toward balance, integration, and self-realization. Dreams are not disguises—they are meaningful communications from both the personal and collective unconscious.

🪜 Step 1: Record the Dream in Detail

Write the dream immediately after waking:

  • Include images, symbols, characters, setting, and emotions
  • Capture even small or strange details

Jung emphasized:

  • The dream is a complete message as it appears

🔍 Step 2: Identify Key Symbols & Figures

Break the dream into important elements:

  • People (known or unknown)
  • Objects, animals, places
  • Repeated or striking images

Each symbol is:

  • A living expression of the psyche, not a fixed definition

🧠 Step 3: Personal Associations

Ask yourself:

  • “What does this symbol mean to me personally?”
  • “Where have I seen or felt this before?”

This reveals:

  • Connections to your life experiences and inner state

🌌 Step 4: Amplification (Expanding the Symbol)

Explore broader meanings of the symbol:

  • Cultural, mythological, or universal themes
  • Archetypal patterns (e.g., king, shadow, journey, child)

This step helps you see:

  • How your dream connects to deeper human patterns

⚖️ Step 5: Identify Emotional Tone

Focus on the feelings in the dream:

  • Fear, awe, confusion, peace, tension

Emotions reveal:

  • The energy and importance of the message

Ask:

  • “What feeling dominates the dream?”

🌗 Step 6: Recognize Opposites & Imbalance

Look for:

  • Conflicts or contrasts (light/dark, high/low, control/loss)

Dreams often highlight:

  • Imbalance in the psyche

They point to:

  • What needs adjustment or integration

🌑 Step 7: Identify Archetypal Patterns

Determine if figures represent deeper forces, such as:

  • The Self (wholeness)
  • The Shadow (hidden aspects)
  • The Anima/Animus (inner feminine/masculine)
  • The Wise figure, child, hero, or ruler

These are:

  • Universal patterns guiding psychological development

🔄 Step 8: Track the Movement of the Dream

Observe the direction:

  • Are you moving forward, descending, rising, crossing, or transforming?

Movement reflects:

  • A process within the psyche

Ask:

  • “What change is happening?”

🌱 Step 9: Relate to Individuation

Ask:

  • How does this dream relate to my growth?
  • What part of myself is trying to develop or be recognized?

Dreams guide:

  • The process of individuation (becoming whole)

🧭 Step 10: Integrate the Message

Bring the insight into waking life:

  • Adjust behavior, awareness, or attitude
  • Reflect on what needs:
    • Acceptance
    • Change
    • Balance

The goal is:

  • Integration, not just understanding

🌙 Core Method Summary

Jung’s dream interpretation process:

  1. Record the dream
  2. Identify symbols
  3. Explore personal meaning
  4. Amplify with universal meaning
  5. Analyze emotions
  6. Recognize imbalance
  7. Identify archetypes
  8. Track movement
  9. Relate to individuation
  10. Integrate into life

✨ Essence

In Jung’s model, dreams are guides from the deeper self—messages that reveal what is hidden, restore balance, and lead you toward greater awareness, integration, and wholeness.

This guide follows the method attributed to Ibn Sirin, in which dreams are understood as meaningful signs connected to one’s life, conduct, and condition. Interpretation focuses on context, symbolism, and outcomes, with careful attention to detail.

🪜 Step 1: Record the Dream Clearly

Write the dream as soon as you wake:

  • Include people, objects, actions, places, and emotions
  • Note any numbers, colors, or repeated elements

Clarity is essential because:

  • Meaning depends on specific details

🔍 Step 2: Identify Key Symbols

Break the dream into main elements:

  • Body parts
  • Animals
  • Objects
  • Actions (falling, traveling, speaking, etc.)

Each symbol represents:

  • A real-life condition, person, or situation

⚖️ Step 3: Determine the Dreamer’s Condition

Interpretation depends on the dreamer’s state:

  • Social position
  • Occupation
  • Current struggles or blessings

Ask:

  • “What is happening in my life right now?”

The same symbol may differ based on:

  • Personal circumstance

🧿 Step 4: Examine the Context of the Symbol

Look at how the symbol appears:

  • Is it strong or weak?
  • Complete or damaged?
  • Beneficial or harmful?

Meaning is shaped by:

  • The condition and behavior of the symbol

🔄 Step 5: Analyze the Action

Focus on what is happening:

  • Movement (rising, falling, crossing, entering)
  • Interaction (giving, receiving, speaking)

Actions indicate:

  • Change, transition, or outcome

🌅 Step 6: Consider the Outcome

The ending of the dream is critical:

  • Positive ending → relief, success, or improvement
  • Negative ending → difficulty, loss, or warning

Always ask:

  • “Where did the dream lead?”

⚠️ Step 7: Distinguish the Nature of the Dream

Not all dreams are the same. Determine if the dream:

  • Feels clear and meaningful → likely significant
  • Feels chaotic or confusing → may be influenced by daily thoughts

Focus interpretation on:

  • Dreams that are coherent and impactful

🏠 Step 8: Relate Symbols to Real Life

Connect each symbol to:

  • Family, work, health, or personal affairs

For example:

  • Authority figures → leadership or control
  • Movement → change in condition

Interpretation is grounded in:

  • practical life realities

⚖️ Step 9: Weigh Good and Bad Signs

Dreams may contain both:

  • Positive indicators (gain, success, stability)
  • Negative indicators (loss, hardship, warning)

Balance them to understand:

  • The overall message

🧭 Step 10: Reflect and Apply the Meaning

Consider what the dream is indicating:

  • A warning → act with caution
  • A sign of good → remain grateful and steady
  • A transition → prepare for change

The purpose is:

  • Awareness and guidance

🌙 Core Method Summary

Ibn Sirin’s interpretation process:

  1. Record the dream
  2. Identify symbols
  3. Consider personal condition
  4. Examine context of symbols
  5. Analyze actions
  6. Focus on outcome
  7. Determine dream type
  8. Relate to real life
  9. Weigh meanings
  10. Reflect and apply

✨ Essence

In Ibn Sirin’s method, dreams are signs connected to life’s condition and direction—and through careful attention to detail, context, and outcome, they offer guidance, warning, and insight into one’s path.

This guide follows the method of Artemidorus, in which dreams are interpreted according to their practical meaning in waking life—status, livelihood, relationships, and outcomes. Every symbol is understood in relation to real-world conditions and consequences.

🪜 Step 1: Record the Dream Precisely

Write the dream in full detail:

  • People, objects, actions, setting, and sequence
  • Note order of events, not just symbols

Accuracy matters because:

  • Meaning depends on specific circumstances within the dream

🔍 Step 2: Break the Dream into Elements

Separate the dream into parts:

  • Persons (family, strangers, authority figures)
  • Body parts
  • Objects and structures
  • Actions and movements

Each element reflects:

  • A real-life counterpart or condition

🧠 Step 3: Identify the Dreamer’s Role

Determine your position in the dream:

  • Are you active, passive, observing, or affected?

This reveals:

  • Whether you are in control, influenced, or at risk in waking life

⚖️ Step 4: Consider the Dreamer’s Social Condition

Interpretation depends on who the dreamer is:

  • Occupation, status, responsibilities

Ask:

  • “How does this symbol relate to my role in life?”

The same dream may differ based on:

  • Rank, wealth, or responsibilities

🪙 Step 5: Translate Symbols into Practical Meaning

Convert dream images into real-life equivalents:

  • Authority figures → leadership or power structures
  • Movement → change in condition
  • Objects → tools, resources, or responsibilities

Focus on:

  • Concrete outcomes, not abstract ideas

🔄 Step 6: Analyze the Action

Pay attention to what is happening:

  • Rising, falling, crossing, receiving, losing

Actions indicate:

  • Change, gain, loss, or transition

⚠️ Step 7: Evaluate Stability & Risk

Ask:

  • Is the situation in the dream stable or unstable?

For example:

  • Safe ground → security
  • Heights, narrow paths → danger or uncertainty

This reflects:

  • The level of risk in waking life

🌅 Step 8: Focus on the Outcome

The ending determines the meaning:

  • Successful outcome → gain, completion, or improvement
  • Failure or harm → loss, setback, or danger

Always interpret:

  • Based on where the dream leads

🏠 Step 9: Relate to Daily Life

Connect the dream to:

  • Work, finances, relationships, responsibilities

Artemidorus emphasized:

  • Dreams reveal practical consequences, not abstract theory

⚖️ Step 10: Weigh the Overall Result

Consider all elements together:

  • Positive signs vs. negative signs

Determine:

  • Whether the dream indicates:
    • Advancement
    • Stability
    • Risk or decline

🌙 Core Method Summary

Artemidorus’ interpretation process:

  1. Record the dream
  2. Break into elements
  3. Identify your role
  4. Consider your social condition
  5. Translate symbols practically
  6. Analyze actions
  7. Evaluate stability
  8. Focus on outcome
  9. Relate to daily life
  10. Weigh the result

✨ Essence

In Artemidorus’ method, dreams are maps of real-life conditions—and by examining their structure, action, and outcome, you uncover how they reflect movement, risk, and change in your everyday world.

This guide follows Ann Faraday’s approach, which treats dreams as direct reflections of your waking life. Dreams are practical messages about your current situations, emotions, and behaviors, meant to help you better understand and respond to what you are experiencing.

🪜 Step 1: Record the Dream Immediately

Write down the dream as soon as you wake:

  • Include people, places, actions, objects, and emotions
  • Capture the dream in present tense, as if it is happening now

Details matter because:

  • Small elements often connect directly to real-life situations

🔍 Step 2: Describe the Dream in Simple Terms

Summarize the dream plainly:

  • “I was falling,”
  • “I was crossing a bridge,”
  • “I was trapped in a tunnel”

This helps you see:

  • The core situation the dream is presenting

🧠 Step 3: Identify the Main Issue

Ask:

  • “What is the main problem or situation in this dream?”

Faraday focused on:

  • The central theme, such as:
    • Loss of control
    • Transition
    • Conflict
    • Decision-making

⚖️ Step 4: Connect the Dream to Waking Life

Ask yourself:

  • “Where in my life is this happening right now?”

Look for:

  • Situations at work, home, or in relationships
  • Current stress, change, or uncertainty

Dreams reflect:

  • What you are dealing with now, not distant or abstract ideas

😟 Step 5: Focus on Your Feelings

Identify how you felt in the dream:

  • Fear, confusion, calm, pressure, relief

Then ask:

  • “Where do I feel this same emotion in my life?”

Emotions are:

  • The key to understanding the message

🔄 Step 6: Look at Your Actions

What did you do in the dream?

  • Did you run, fall, resist, cross, hide, or observe?

This reflects:

  • How you are responding to situations in real life

Ask:

  • “Is this how I usually react?”

🤝 Step 7: Identify Other People or Figures

Consider who appears in the dream:

  • People may represent:
    • Themselves
    • Aspects of you
    • Roles in your life

Ask:

  • “What does this person mean to me personally?”

🌫️ Step 8: Notice Obstacles or Movement

Look for:

  • Barriers (walls, tunnels, broken bridges)
  • Movement (falling, climbing, crossing)

These show:

  • Whether you feel stuck, progressing, or unstable

🌅 Step 9: Examine the Outcome

How does the dream end?

  • Resolution, escape, fall, or uncertainty

The ending reflects:

  • Your expectations or feelings about where things are headed

🧭 Step 10: Apply the Insight

Ask:

  • “What is this dream telling me to notice or change?”

Use the insight to:

  • Adjust your behavior
  • Gain awareness
  • Respond differently in waking life

The goal is:

  • Practical understanding and personal growth

🌙 Core Method Summary

Faraday’s interpretation process:

  1. Record the dream
  2. Simplify the scenario
  3. Identify the main issue
  4. Connect to waking life
  5. Focus on emotions
  6. Analyze your actions
  7. Understand people
  8. Observe obstacles/movement
  9. Examine the outcome
  10. Apply the insight

✨ Essence

In Ann Faraday’s method, dreams are clear reflections of your current life—and by understanding them, you gain practical insight into what you’re experiencing, how you’re responding, and what may need to change.

“I dreamt that I was in the living room of an old house. The house did not look familiar in any way; it was the type of house that an elderly woman would live in. I stood near a flight of steps that elevated into the stars.

It was dark but the illumination from the stars emitted enough light to see. Suddenly- I saw two wolves appear to the left side of the room. I recall others (though I saw no one else) harboring an instant feeling of fear and caution (exactly as most people would feel if two wolves walked down the street past them). The wolves weren’t menacing, or the most beautiful of the species. They looked average with dark coats of fur. I recall the wolves’ pink lips standing out to me. They strolled right past me and headed for the staircase to the stars- as if I didn’t even exist. For a brief second, I battled between a feeling of caution (not fear); wondering if I should actually attempt to confront them or just let them go on their merry way. It then became clear that the chance to speak to the wolves would quickly pass, so I made the decision to confront them. My spirit wanted to confront them about the deep pain and misfortune that I had been experiencing within my life. In this very moment, I knew that they were the keepers of some sort of mystical power over all things. I knew that they were representations of the Universe. I approached the wolves.

As I approached the wolves, the first one instantly stopped as he began to ascend the first steps and turned toward me (attentively). The feeling was as the wolf knew me but had totally forgotten about me. The only word that my spirit could utter was ‘WHY’. Before I could say another word, the wolf basically told me that he was going to balance out everything for me and not to worry. I instantly felt a feeling of relief (but not gratitude). I felt as if I had been neglected, over-looked and not given fair treatment; but I knew that my life would have balance from this point forward.”

  1. Documents the dream or vision (the sooner the better). This dream I did not immediately document. My memory of this dream is still very clear and accurate, but best practice is to jot them down before our recollections fade. Some of the smallest voided occurrences could drastically affect the dreams’ meaning.
    • You should rewrite the dream or vision, once you are fully conscious and attempted to include any forgotten detail. The first draft allows your mind to compartmentalize the memory.
    • Colors and numbers within dreams and vision are crucial to interpretation!
    • Be sure to document whether the vision occurs in light or darkness
    • If your lazy like me- A voice recorder or phone can help in the process
    • If you have a dream or vision and don’t feel like waking up, meditating on the most rememberable part of the dream once awoke will help in your recollection process

  1. Identifying the main components within the dream or vision is key. In the example above- I have highlighted the main content of which I found to be relative within the dream. Think of it as separating the dream or vision into puzzle pieces, that you will eventually fit back together. The content will be a person, place, or thing, we don’t want to confuse this step with too much action (once we gain insight into the main dream content, only then can the actions be consciously determined).
  2. In the example above- I have determined that three components are the most relevant. Some dreams or visions can have more or less components, but more does not necessarily mean better. Too many components can confuse the interpretation, so it’s best to decide which components feel important to you. These are the things within the dream that evoked memorable feelings and emotion (fear, confusion, wonder, ect..).
  3. Document your list of content and feelings, as I have within the following example. Ask yourself in depth, ‘WHY?‘- have I chosen this particular component as a piece to the puzzle.
    • living room of an old house: I chose this piece because it was the opening; the setting for the dream. When I replay the dream within my mind, the living room and the house evoke feeling of confusion. I recall asking myself – “What am I doing here“, and “who’s house is this
    • flight of steps that elevated into the stars: I chose this piece because within the dream this was the strangest thing of all to me. It was out of place and defied the Laws of Physics. When I replay the dream within my mind, the staircase to the stars evokes feelings of bewilderment and awe. Consciously- I find outer space to be the most beautiful sight in existence, beyond compare.
    • two wolves appear to the left side of the room (pink lips) : I chose this piece because within the dream this was the point when my thoughts began to race. It is the point where I began to question a lot of things. The point where I became aware of possible danger and the need for caution. The wolves within this dream did not evoke fear, though I heard voices of unseen people whom all seemed terrified. I recall initially feeling apprehension because even though the wolves seemed clearly unaware of me and calm, I knew that they were still unpredictable creatures (JOeSPH DReAM on ‘Wolves’). Eventually- I determined them to be peaceful. It became aware to me that they were wise and very powerful beings. My feelings of apprehension at this point, instantly shifted to feeling of helplessness and hurt, as I thought about all the misfortune that I had experienced within my life, and the power that the wolves had to change my life’s trajectory. I felt as if I had been forgotten and overlooked. Though some emotions were experienced through other entities, they are none the less MY feelings; so, we can see that my emotions quickly morphed from fear and terror- to apprehension- to helplessness and hurt. (pink lips) I highlight this content because the main color I could recall were the wolves’ pink lips. Within the dream they stood out, somehow insisting that the wolves could communicate.

“UNDERSTANDING YOUR EMOTIONS IS THE KEY TO A BETTER LIFE”

Once we have out list of puzzle pieces, we know meditate on each individual component in depth. This consists of our own personal views, since everyone’s brain operates uniquely. I implore you to explore the dream library in-order to incorporate information in relation to any other person, place or thing that you need basic insight into (In the end it is your own minds beliefs and associations that truly count).

  1. living room of an old house: When I think of a living room, I think of peace and relaxation. This is where most folk watch television and unwind after a long stressful day. This is the area of the house where family and friends gather. When I think of an old house, I think of the past. I think of a place where priceless mementos are held.
  2. flight of steps that elevated into the stars: When I think of steps or stairs, I think of something that ascends (this is only because the dream occurred at the bottom of the staircase). I think of elevating to a higher level. I think of a portal to another area (If the staircase was familiar, I would associate the staircase with a place or incident that occurred). When I think of the stars, I think of mundane dreams, space and all the beautiful unknown it possesses. I think of the residence of higher beings and the creator(s) of all things. I think of the minute roll that human beings play in the totality of existence. Stars give me a sort of spiritual emotion. So, when I think of the stairs elevating into the stars, I think of a portal to my dreams and the unknown.
  3. two wolves appear to the left side of the room (pink lips): When I think of the number two, I think of Ying and Yang in the Chinese philosophy. The balancing out of energies. I also think of the male and female, and the connections to create. When I think of lips in relation to this dream, I think of communication. The ability to speak. When I think of the color pink, I think of femininity and love. Pink in my experience reminds me of something gentle and soft. I think there’s no more beautiful color for a woman to wear than pink.

So far- we have documented our dream or vision, created puzzle pieces through the power of emotional cues and meditated on our puzzle pieces. Now- it’s time to put our puzzle back together. When attempting to reassemble our puzzle we will connect them in order, compounding them piece by piece. In our example- the first two piece on our list will be combined together as follows:

  1. living room of an old house & flight of steps that elevated into the stars: Within my meditation I determined (in short) that the living room of the old house represented a peaceful gathering place to me, where priceless mementos (treasures) are usually stored. I also determined (in short) that the flight of steps elevating into the stars represented a portal to my dreams and the unknown. When I put these two pieces together it compounds into a peaceful gathering place where a portal to dreams and the unknown exists. When I meditate further on the possible meaning of the compounded pieces, I determine that a peaceful place where a portal to dreams and the unknown exists could easily be a representation of my mind. A place where I hold all my mementos and treasures. A place where my dreams are held. A place where unknown possibility exists. Herein- I determine these two pieces to represent my mind. It is the setting of my dream. The meeting place!
  2. living room of an old house & flight of steps that elevated into the stars & two wolves appear to the left side of the room (pink lips) : The first two pieces of the puzzle have been determined to represent the mind (the meeting place). Within my meditation I determined (in short) that the two wolves appearing to the left side of the room with pink lips represented the universe (or a higher power) communicating with me. Herein- I determine the first compound of puzzle pieces and the new piece to represent the universe meeting with me within my mind. So- the puzzle has been assembled, and the main theme is that ‘THE UNIVERSE IS COMMUNICATING WITH ME
  3. Now that we have a foundational theme for the dream ‘THE UNIVERSE IS COMMUNICATING WITH ME‘, our next question is what is the Universe trying to communicate. If we are unsure of the meaning thus far, our next step is to try and identify other relevant component of the dream or vision. Interpreting a dream can be as quick as minutes- to days, so have patience. The more you practice and develop the necessary mind focus, the easier it will become.

  1. In order to solidify our dream interpretation, we must meditate further on the dream in general; we must identify relevant overlooked content. When I replay the dream within my mind, I focus on the wolves directly (the Universe) and their movements. I recall the wolves entering the scene from the left side and making their way over to the stairs to the right. This was a meditation that I previously overlooked.
    • two wolves appear to the left side of the room (pink lips): When I think of the movements from left to right, I think of the movements from what I consider bad to good or misfortune to fortune. I determine this because of my previous Christian upbringing and my studies into various other religious beliefs. The theme was always right-side equals righteousness. This is how my mind operates because of my past studies (Some cultures may hold the belief that left side is the more fortunate direction). For someone experiencing the same exact dream as me within a different culture, he or she may have seen the wolves appear to the right side and travel to the left.
  2. In conclusion- I determine in my interpretation that the Universe is communicating to me that my misfortune and pain will move toward fortune and happiness. That the two parts (Yin & Yang) will balance out their energies for me. That it is my time for elevation.
