The ‘Oneirocritica

Written in five books, the Oneirocritica offers a systematic account of dream interpretation. Books I–II address general principles and were dedicated to a patron, Cassius Maximus; Books III–IV, written for Artemidorus’s son, refine symbolic analysis; Book V compiles verified prophetic dreams. Drawing on earlier Greek oneirocritical works, Artemidorus emphasized empirical observation over conjecture and grounded his interpretations in daily life and social hierarchy .

Influence and legacy

The Oneirocritica became the authoritative manual of dream interpretation in antiquity and the Middle Ages, circulating in Greek, Latin, and Arabic translations. It influenced Byzantine writers and medieval Islamic dream lore and later intrigued Renaissance scholars and modern psychoanalysts such as Sigmund Freud. Beyond its divinatory purpose, the work remains a valuable ethnographic source on the moral, economic, and religious fabric of the Greco-Roman world
